Macaron Vs. Macaroon: Do YOU know the difference?
Are you confused?
Although commonly misinterpreted, "Macaroons" are not the same as "Macarons" (pronounced 'mack-ah-ron'), the actual name of these colorful cookies!
Macaroons (pictured on the right) refer to a coconut based pastry that's made with coconut, egg whites, and sugar. Sometimes dipped in chocolate known as 'congolais' in France! They’re frequently served during Passover, due to it not containing any flour.
Macarons (pictured on the left) are the colorful & trendy, meringue-based French cookie made with almond flour, egg whites, and sugar then filled with a buttercream, ganache, or jam filling to add a soft, tasteful center in between the airy cookies. These wonderful pastries are not only unbelievably satisfying to eat but also to look at! Whether as a snack, pairing with tea, or as a wedding/party favor or dessert, these french cookies are a sure smile maker.
So, although commonly mistaken for one another the two pastries are vastly different! Besides the spelling & pronunciation of the two, they don’t share too much in common. Flavor, texture, and overall look are worlds apart! So now that you know the difference you can share this with friends, family, & other pastry connoisseurs to let them know too.
The popularity of these amazing little pastries has risen in the recent years. Popular locations to get them are NYC, Canada, or better yet France! People such as you and I, travel many miles to get Macarons from their favorite cafe/bakery due to the fine line between good & GREAT Macarons. Long Island does not have many Macaron cafes or bakeries that specialize in these cookies, due to this fact it is quite difficult to locate freshly made, quality Macarons at a fair price.
"The name comes from the Italian word maccarone or maccherone meaning "paste", referring to the original almond paste ingredient; this word itself derives from ammaccare, meaning 'to crush'"
